Dream Theater at the Helsinki Ice hall

..with Opeth as the opening act! And there was also a band called Bigelf, but I only heard the last song from them, so can’t really say anything about their performance.

Opeth was…err… interesting. I was a bit surprised about their attitude: “The next song is difficult and we’re not sure if we are able play that”… and after song “okay, I guess it went pretty ok, what do you think?”. And the vocalist was telling stories about how he first time met Dream Theater.

It was a bit like they didn’t respect themselves that much in the “we are just little school boys here and got a chance to be on stage together with DT”. Add to that the fact that the sounds were not that brilliant, it wasn’t such a ecstasical experience.

And then the DT. I had bright on my mid theri last show in Finland with Symphony X. Back then they really blew out my mind! Who the fuck is crazy enough to even try to play songs like “Lines in the sand”, “Learning to live” and “Trial of Tears” live? Well, DT is – and they damn did it! But it was a year ago or something. This time they had a new album, Black clouds and silver linings, which is a pretty good album indeed. Maybe best DT album after Scenes from a memory. So there were chance for a spectacular show.

But. It wasn’t. It was only “great” show. It was not mind-blowing. The sounds were inferior to previous shows, the act was pretty static -as always with DT – and the song selection was a bit.. weird in my opinion. Of course they played a lot from the new album, namely three songs – which makes half the album ;) . But then some obscure songs from Awake and Falling into infinity. Not bad, but not perfect. And perfect is what I always expect from Dream Theater.
